PAN
- Permanent Account Number for NRI - Non Resident Indians.
A non-resident Indian
(NRI) is a citizen of India holding an Indian passport and has temporarily immigrated
to another country for usually six months or more for employment, residence,
education or any other purpose. There are millions of NRI and have the same
problems and are in the similar situation.
Quite few are very successful.
Some of them have secured the citizenship of other countries and some
are in the process of securing the citizenship.
Many NRI have spent their lifetime in hope of changing their economic
condition but some have changed their economic condition and some are still
struggling to overcome their economic condition. A person moves from his own country to another
country for better pastures.
Whereas there are other
countries, who do not offer citizenship to the foreigners, hence in spite
staying for over many decades also they remain as NRI. The government of India
has various schemes for NRI’s and they are for the benefit of NRI community. NRI’s are eligible to open the following
accounts in Indian banks.
Non-Resident Ordinary
Rupee Account (NRO Account)
NRO accounts may be
opened / maintained in the form of current, savings, recurring or fixed deposit
accounts.
● Savings Account -
Normally maintained for crediting legitimate income, Banks are free to
determine the interest rates
● Term Deposits - Once
again the banks are free to determine the interest rates. Interest rates
offered by banks on NRO deposits should not be higher than those offered by
them on comparable domestic rupee deposits.
B. Non-Resident
(External) Rupee Account (NRE Account)
● NRE account may be in
the form of savings, current, recurring or fixed deposit accounts (with
maturity of minimum one year).
● NRIs may be permitted
to open NRE account with their resident close relatives on ‘former or survivor
‘basis.

The income tax
department of India issues a unique ten-digit alphanumeric number in the form
of a laminated card. The pan card will help in assessing your taxation. The
income tax department has authorized few agencies for issuing the PAN
Card.
It is better to have a
PAN card as nowadays it is a requirement for most of the transactions or
getting the benefit of taxation. It is
applied in a prescribed form known as Form 49A.
