Hindustan Petroleum and Liquefied Petroleum - LPG
Liquefied petroleum gas
or liquid petroleum gas (LPG or LP gas), also technically known as propane or
butane, are flammable mixtures of hydrocarbon gases used as fuel in various
types of appliances, cooking equipment, and even vehicles. LPG contains mixes
that are primarily propane (C3H8), primarily butane (C4H10) and usually mixes
include both propane and butane. LPG is a nonpoisonous and colorless gas, which
can be liquefied at moderate pressure and is stored in cylinders as a liquid
under pressure. During production a
chemical compound by name mercaptan is added to it so as to give the foul smell
for easy detection of gas in the air. Even while cooking we get the smell of
the gas. If the gas is heavier there is
chances of leakage, which need to be addressed immediately.
LPG is prepared by
refining petroleum or wet natural gas; it is derived from fossil fuel
sources. It is manufactured during the
refining of petroleum or natural gas streams as they emerge from the ground. The
boiling point is below room temperature; LPG will evaporate quickly at normal
temperatures and pressures and is usually supplied in pressurized steel
vessels. They are typically filled to 80–85% of their capacity to allow for
thermal expansion of the contained liquid. There are different weights of vessels in
which it is supplied. The vessels are
usually known as cylinders. The
cylinders for domestic purposes are small compared to the cylinders used for
commercial purposes.
The LPG cylinders are
freely available in petroleum exporting countries and other developed
nations. However in the developing
countries and the countries which are short of fossil fuels, the rationing
system is followed in order to supply the gas cylinders containing LPG.
